Financial Secretary Paul Chan promoted Hong Kong’s advantages and opportunities at a symposium attended by local leaders from various sectors on the first day of a visit to Jakarta, Indonesia.
At the Think Business, Think Hong Kong Symposium, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Mr Chan addressed over 1,500 leaders from industrial, commercial, financial, and innovation and technology sectors of Indonesia and nearby regions.
In his speech, he outlined that the unique advantages of having connections to both Mainland China and foreign countries under the “one country, two systems” principle, allow Hong Kong to serve as a “super connector” and “super value-adder”.
He said that Hong Kong is not only an international financial, shipping and trading centre, and an international hub for high-calibre talent, but also a core city of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), making it the most convenient and efficient gateway for Indonesian enterprises to enter Mainland China.
Mr Chan also highlighted Hong Kong’s strengths in financial services and green technology and spoke of the city’s advantages in high-value supply chain management services.
He invited Indonesian companies to establish their international or regional business headquarters, corporate treasury centres, and supply chain management centres, in Hong Kong.
Afterwards, Mr Chan met several senior Indonesian government officials, including the country’s Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, its Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, its Minister of Investment & Downstream Industry Rosan Perkasa Roeslani and its Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri.
Mr Chan briefed them on development opportunities in Hong Kong and the GBA.
They also discussed ways to strengthen various aspects of economic co-operation between Hong Kong and Indonesia.
Mr Chan invited the officials to visit Hong Kong and lead business delegations to the city and the GBA to explore more business opportunities and strengthen collaboration.
The Financial Secretary also had lunch with key members of the China Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia to learn about the local social economic conditions and business environment.
In the evening, Mr Chan attended a Hong Kong Dinner organised by the HKTDC and gave a speech covering aspects of business, culture and tourism in Hong Kong to more than 400 leaders from Indonesia’s commercial and industrial sectors.
