Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury Christopher Hui today visited the Applied Science & Technology Research Institute (ASTRI).

During the visit, Mr Hui exchanged views with the institute on how financial technology can drive the growth of financial services.

He noted that ASTRI's strategic initiatives include partnerships with top local universities to harness knowledge and nurture talent, including the FinTech Future Leader Academy, an internship programme enabling students to understand fintech business, and the FinTech Ecosystem Alliance, a new initiative that aims to strengthen the fintech ecosystem in Hong Kong through the association with various stakeholders for collaborations.

The financial services chief also discussed with the institute how Hong Kong can make use of fintech to enhance its status as an international financial centre and drive the digital economy of the future.

He outlined three key areas of the Financial Services & the Treasury Bureau to foster the development of fintech in Hong Kong, including opening up government data, the establishment of the Coordination Group on Implementation of Fintech Initiatives and skill enhancement.

“We are confident that the three-pronged strategy could fully tap the opportunities offered by fintech and help Hong Kong develop into an international fintech hub,” Mr Hui said.
