The Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel and Cross Bay Link, Tseung Kwan O will be open to traffic on December 11.

The Transport Department expects 30% to 40% of the vehicles that pass through the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel to switch to the new route.

The two highway projects will serve as a new route between Tseung Kwan O and Kwun Tong as well as the Eastern Harbour Crossing, shortening the journey time between LOHAS Park and Kwun Tong Town Centre by up to about 20 minutes during the morning peak hours.

The Cross Bay Link will be the first marine viaduct in Hong Kong comprising carriageways, a cycle track and a footway. In addition to diverting traffic at Wan Po Road, the marine viaduct will connect to the cycle track along the Tseung Kwan O waterfront to form a 5km coastal cycling track loop.

The design and construction of the marine viaduct integrating the high-strength structural steel design and advanced modular integrated construction enhances the sustainability of the project, reducing the carbon footprint by 20%.

As a new trunk road linking Tseung Kwan O and the urban area, the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel has a total length of about 3.8km, of which about 2.2km is in the form of a tunnel. It connects the Eastern Harbour Crossing and the Cross Bay Link, providing an alternative route for the existing Tseung Kwan O Tunnel to help divert traffic to and from Tseung Kwan O.

The department noted that by using the new route, the drive between LOHAS Park and Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate would be shortened, while those using the existing Tseung Kwan O Tunnel to get to Po Lam and Hang Hau would enjoy a more convenient commute.

There will be new traffic signs to guide motorists.

The Government will also implement a toll waiver for the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel and Tseung Kwan O Tunnel from December 11.

Five new bus routes will come into service from December 12, namely 96, 290E, 298X, 790 and 795.

Additionally, plans are in place to re-route four existing bus lines through the new route about two to three months after the commissioning of the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel and Cross Bay Link, including 90, 296P, 795X and 798P.
